23rd September 2014 - the birth

So, on Monday 22nd I felt crummy all day. I didn't know if I was coming down with a cold, or a tummy ache, or what. I even slept for 2 hours in the afternoon. Dave came home and said that Tuesday was going to be really busy. There was a new girl in the office that he had to teach his work to before he goes off, and he had a lot of work to catch up on anyway....
Off to bed we go. Dave fell asleep straight away, and I wasn't far behind. At midnight I turned over to go to the loo, and thought I'd wet myself, before waking up and realising it was my waters! I LEPT out of bed, and they kept coming all over the floor all the way to the loo.
I sat on the loo for a while, wondering what I do next! I called the delivery suite for advice, and they said due to my GBS I had to go in for monitoring. So now, I have to wake Dave....this was far more difficult than it should be, and then he didn't believe me for a while. I woke him up with such a shock he got cramp in his leg, and couldn't get out of bed! He then needed a wee, then a poo, then we hadn't finished packing the bags - drama! 20 mins later and we were at the hospital. I had to wait til just before 1am for them to take me on to the suite cos they were so busy. Just after 1 contractions started. They're fun...they do start like period cramps, but end a lot worse!
They kept monitoring the babies heartbeat, which got increasingly difficult, only because you were coming down so far and we're still moving.
At first (and second) check I was 3cm. On the second check I was in a fair bit more pain. I asked Dave to find a midwife to discuss pain relief. The mw that came was "fun"  s bit of a matron, but explained things ok. I explained that I wanted to start with the least restrictive, so we went for a bath. This was actually quite horrific! I didn't fit in the bath well, and then it was sooooo long I could sit up in it. I also couldn't lie down cos of the pain. I didn't stay in long before going back to the room. I then started gas and air. This was not how I thought it was going to be. It did make me feel a bit drunk, but didn't overly take the pain away. I think for me it was much more a diversion tactic - try to concentrate on that not my pains. Also, it made me horrifically sick. I asked Dave to get me a hat (as I couldn't get off the bed), but by the time he came back I had already vomited all over myself....and it kept coming...
The midwife kept telling me to move around, but I was so tired I couldn't! Then they couldn't find your heartbeat. They decided to put a clip on your head - again, this is not fun! It's like they're checking how dilated I am, but then have to push the tape in and try to get it on your head! Ouch! At least they combined it with checking how dilated I am :) eventually I was 5 cm and they moved me to the delivery suite!
I had a new mw now, Stacey, who was a lot nicer. She was my age, and caring and kind & explained everything really well. There was also a trainee Dr there, who was relatively quiet, but nice all the same.
Again I began to puke, and I asked for more pain relief. At this point I had my cannular out in for the antibiotics. Stacey did a good job, cos it didn't hurt! I vaguely remember Dave telling her I don't like needles :)
I had a shot of anti sickness & pethidine. I'm pretty sure this is when my eyes closed....I don't remember opening them again properly until you were born.
Things continued as they had done, but the contractions were getting worse. Dave managed to have 10m kip, I remember seeing him, and thinking "you're really tired".
As things got closer I remember thinking "I need to push" but not doing so. It was more & more painful, and I actually asked for an epidural! I kept saying to Dave "I can't do this". He was so good in encouraging me and reassuring me. As it happened I couldn't have an epidural, as the ward was so busy there wasn't a Dr that could come immediately, and I could have more pethidine in 15 mins. So I took that option. In hindsight that it was too late, as I already needed to push. I feel that the last shot didn't do as much as the first. I started a slow gentle push....that wasn't going to cut it!
Anyway, Stacey encouraged me to get off the bed. I was now leant over it, with Dave leant over the other side holding my arms and encouraging me. I was pushing, and Stacey said she could see your head & that you had lots of dark hair! I was so scared at this point. Due to the way I was standing it felt like I was going to rip forwards. Stacey was getting firm with me saying I had to push because your head was almost out, and I could hurt you if I didn't.
Then you got stuck. Stacey asked Dave to press the panic button. I can remember the room filling with people instantly, and hearing a man's voice behind me (the first consultant we saw). It turns out you had your hand up by your head. Stacey un hooked it and after a few more pushes you were out!
Stacey brought you up between my legs, and told me to tell Dave what you were. I told him you were a girl :) they then wooshed you to the other side of the room to check that it was just your hand that was stuck, and if your arm was ok. You had a slight bruise on your shoulder (left). They had cut the cord, but had done it long. Dave then trimmed it, they wrapped you in a towel, and handed you to Dave.
Perfection!

Week 38

It's been a busy time.
I left work at the end of August, on annual leave (don't start maternity leave until 21st sept).

So after my first gtt test coming back negative, I was semi released from consultant care, back to the midwife.

I've been back and forth the hospital, as I couldn't feel the baby move, and then they were shocked about how quickly it had grown, so I had to go for another gtt test and more scans. The scan showed baby is big! (Measuring 38 weeks at 35 weeks)
The gtt test came back negative again. They were unsure whether or not I'd be back under consultant care or not, but I have another consultant appointment on 23rd sept. I'm not sure what for.

My mw talks a lot about 10lb babies, and that I'm at a higher risk of a c section due to the baby's size. But they won't induce me for a big baby, but they won't let me go over my due date.

During one of my hospital visits they found out I have GBS (group b strep). This is just a bacterial infection I can pass on to the baby during birth. I have to have IV antibiotics during labour - yes that means a cannula.....the one thing that I wanted to avoid, cos they FREAK ME OUT. But, needs must! There also goes my chance of a water birth.

There's been a lot of personal things going on too - clinical psychologist lost her baby, Nicola's husband killed himself after she left him for a woman, ISP seems to be crumbling with complaints from family coming in, Lucy's mum set herself on fire. Oh and 4 weddings - emma and Ian hill, Anna and Craig Gilchrist, Emma and Gwyn Reynolds, and Caroline and john greens.

Like I said, I've been busy.

Week 24

It's been a bust time recently, finishing my course, big meetings at work and holding a hen do for Anna Brown.

I'm very tired. Bad back, achy ankle.

But generally great! I'm feeling you kick a lot more now. In fact this week you made my hand move! However, when daddy puts his hand on, you stop immediately :(

Bumps

9 weeks

11 weeks

20 weeks

22 weeks

37 weeks

Week 20

Had out 20week scan may 16th. Baby has very long legs apparently, but I have to go back for another scan because they couldn't see all four chambers of the heart. They say thes nothing to be worried about because they can see it beating really hard, but they do need to see it.

Also been suffering with really bad toothache. Finally got to see the dentist, who said its a "pretty horrific gum infection", so I Have antibiotics to take, paracetamol isn't even touching the pain. It's making things pretty bad, but as a mate said "it's nothing compared to child birth".

Oh, Dave got a new car this week too.... Even tho mine's broken! Fun fun!

Week 18

Whoops! Baby has given me baby brain& we forgot to write on this!
So, I've had a scan at 10 and 11 weeks...
Saw midwife at 17 weeks, and heard ur heartbeat, but have also bought a heart Doppler, so daddy and I have been listening at home.

It's so awesome to hear!

Generally I've been feeling fine, a little light headed and tired in the afternoon sometimes, and hungry...

Midwife said I have only out on 5lbs since getting pregnant, so that's really really good. Tho ice eaten a lot since,so have probably doubled that now :(

Should be having a scan for the 20 soon! Can't wait!
Also had my 16 week blood tests last week, so should hear by the end of this week.
Also had a letter from the consultant, and will be seeing them 27th JULY!!!! They can't be that worried about my  weight......

Week 10

What a horrible week. Got told off for 2 hours in work for being grumpy!

That night I had very very bad cramps, then the next day some bleeding. Not really bad, and it was mostly orange coloured!
I saw my gp, who refered me to the EPAU (early pregnancy assessment unit).

That wasn't nice either. Bloods, internal examination, swabs, urine pregnancy test... They were also the bearer of bad news, but didn't give me any real answers, just possibilities. My urine test came back weak, suggesting that I wasn't pregnant, that it hadn't grown or was growing in the wrong place. They said a blood test would be more accurate.

I had to wait two hours for the blood results. But whe. I did they were 65,000 +, which they said would be consistent with being 10 weeks pregnant! But they don't seem too optimistic, so I'm now having a scan. I thought I would have it today (Thursday) but when I called in the afternoon they said they had been calling me all day... But I had no missed calls! Turns out they had the phone number wrong... So now I have to wait til tomorrow :(

I also got my letter through today for my dating scan. It's going to be 13th march 9.45. Unless of course they say not to if I have this emergency one now...

Week 9

Daddy thinks I'm feeling sick more often, which I guess I am. Hormones seem to be affecting my eyes a bit, so I've felt squiffy for about 2 days.

I've been reading on the forum, and I think I still have some symptoms - headaches, nauseous feeling, sore boobs, being grumpy.

Guess I'm still worried it's not true....

Not long to go to know for sure :)

Also, everyone thinks you're a girl :)

Week 8

I've mostly been emotional this week! Crying at everything even the Winter Olympics :)

Boobs still ache, and sickness comes & goes, but is mostly gone.

Sleep - or lack of it - seems to be getting worse!

And my over riding fear that I don't have a raspberry (your current nickname).... I'm very anxious about my scan...

Week 7

2nd week back in work. It's really difficult. I'm only working with 1 service user, and we're so short staffed I spend most of the time in the office alone.

Everyone in work knows too, so it makes it difficult that we're not talking about it..

The last couple of days I have been tired, with varying times of feeling sick - sometimes in the night, sometimes after lunch, sometimes in the morning....my boobs still hurt too, but not as bad.
I don't think I've been in a terribly good mood, not overly snappy, just not 'happy'. I've had a lot of headaches too.

We bought a new bed this weekend. I have buyers remorse big time! Why are we spending this money when we have a baby on the way?! I know we've never had a new bed, and this one if hopefully for life, and will have lots of room for the baby to snuggle in with us :)

Week 6

So, I'm back at work... It's not going well. They've all worked it out. I've told some people I'm on a 'detox'.

I also saw the midwife (Alison) this week (wed 5th feb), who basically said 'good luck. We'll see u at the 12 week scan....'. So it feels no more real!
However she did say that the cramping is normal - phew!

Mood swings are increasing, but I'm mostly in a bad mood, not a good one....

And im till not sleeping well.

And it would seem that I can't eat ham stew - yuk!

The first week - week 5

On the Tuesday after we were home from Portugal I called the drs:

Me: I think I'm pregnant
Nurse: have u taken a test?
Me: 4. All positive.
Nurse: then yes u r. (Went in to facts about false negatives vs false positives- ur more likely to get a false negative then a false positive, let alone 4 positives)
Me: oh... So what should I do?
Nurse: depends, r u happy?
Me: elated
Nurse: then I'll give ur details to the midwife & she'll call u
Me: cool!

I'm still waiting to hear. Apparently the nhs work out ur due date by the first day of your last period (23rd dec 2013)

So our due date is.....

29th September 2014

Which makes us at week 5 (even thought the test said 1-2 weeks pregnant)

I still don't feel pregnant & I'm still waiting to hear from the midwife. I haven't had many more symptoms, although I have cried at dancing on ice because Hayley got a good score.....!

I told some people this week (Anna, Sara, Lucy, mum & dad). Lucy cried when I told her.

Took another clear blue test....

Phew! The weeks have increased!
Lucy & Anna say it's fine that I don't really feel anything yet. But I have a feeling I'm having an increase in mood swings... I wonder if Dave would agree?!

I also bought 20 tests from eBay... Which are coming up positive.

I also told Venessa (my boss) who was very happy for me. Dave and I agreed that due to my job (specialist support worker with adults with severe challenging behaviours and / or mental health problems) there's just high a risk to work with them. She has talked to psychosam who have agreed that we will tell people that this week I'm in the office because I'm "helping with paperwork"!
I'll keep u updated to how that goes. I'm back to work on Monday (3rd feb) and am quite nervous about it).
I also hope I get more symptoms & a call from the midwife soon!

I made Dave put the exercise bike back in the lounge as I haven't done anything since we got back from Portugal. I have managed 15mins at lunch and 5 mins after tea lol. I hope I can keep it up. I'm worried about putting on too much weight and hurting the baby.

The first weekend

So we were in Portugal! We had a lovely weekend, but Siân kept making me not believe,
So I peed on another 2 sticks... Still positive....

On the way home I still didn't believe. I hadn't had many "symptoms". A bit of cramping, and very sore boobs, but very limited sickness - and that could be due to dehydration during the day, and over eating by night? So we bought some more tests. I took some as soon as wek got home. This is test number 4... And all positive.....

Finding out

So, my period was due on 20th January 2014, meaning I would be on not only for our fourth anniversary, but for my 30th birthday! I was bummed to say the least.
Also, Sian had organised for her, Dave, Paul & myself to go to Portugal to celebrate (23-27th).
So, on the 22nd the 4 of us headed down to aunty's to stay there the night (she was taking us to the airport). I realised I still hadnt started & that I was potentially going to drink all weekend, so Dave agreed that I could buy some tests, just to be sure.
After a night of food & drink & catching up with family we went to bed around 11pm.
At 01.50 I woke, dying for a wee, and in eager anticipation to pee on the stick!
Low and behold it said 'pregnant'! What?! We had been trying for almost 3 years and told that I wasn't ovulating, but here it said I was pregnant! I shook it a few times expecting a 'not' to appear, but it didn't...
So I went bounding into the bedroom, and said 'Dave?!'
A muffled 'yes' came back at me
'Are you awake?'
'Yes'
'Can I turn on the light?'
'Yes'
'READ THAT!' I pretty much shouted shoving the test in his face. Needless to say he couldn't read it, not only had I woken him up, but it was bright, and the writing was small! So I told him. We had a cwtch, and we then had very broken sleep for the remaining 2 hours before we got up to go to the airport
